Musikgarten Stories from Linnea's Musikgarten
Jessica Burden and Shawna Scott wrote stories for the Musikgarten contest on Facebook that ended in May. They are posted here for all to enjoy. Thank you Shawna and Jessica for sharing your personal stories and insights!!! By Jessica Burden, Feb. 21 I have had the pleasure of being in Mrs. Linnea Hillesland's Musikgarten class for nearly 3 years. I am an infant nanny (0-2yo) and have found her class to be a fabulous part of our week. The babies always look forward to our time with her and learning all the neat songs and movements. I enjoy sharing the kid's favorites with their parents so that they can connect with them at home as well. I believe it provides a means of additional connection for their working parents. They get to share the music CDs, special shakers and scarves and the children get to communicate through music about what they do while mom and dad are at work. The children, their parents and I all feel that our lives are enriched by this program.
I especially love to see the more-observant/less-participating child come out of their shell after potentially months of attending class. That first hesitant echo of "bum-bum" in the microphone is triumphant for everyone! And catching them mimicking movements with dolls is adorable. But the most life-saving gift for me is being able to pull out a song at the most difficult moment right before a tantrum/melt-down and it catches them off guard and their body/mind just slips right into class mode. "Horsy horsy on our way" is just the right diversion to save the day; because who doesn't like to bounce?!

My daughter, Amy, has been involved in Musikgarten since she was 18-months-old. I am a pianist and avid music lover, but was concerned at how Amy would react to being in a music class. At 18-months, she was not walking, crawling, or talking, and was barely able to sit unsupported. While the other kids were making noises, dancing, and toddling around, I held Amy or propped her up against me for support. However, as the classes progressed, she began to become more responsive to the music and more interactive with the other kids. She was also beginning to show an amazing sense of rhthym and growing connection to music.
Amy is now 3-years-old. Although she is still neither walking nor talking, her 1/2 hour of music class is an obvious highlight to her week. Now a "veteran" of Musikgarten, she is one of the most active kids in her class, clapping with delight when her teacher brings out the instruments, and banging proudly (and loudly) on the gathering drum. Enrolling Amy in Musikgarten was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Her music classes have been a vital part of her development, as beneficial as speech and physical therapy.
I would like to extend my gratitude to her teacher, Linnea Hillesland, for her gift of music and the impact she has made in our lives.

Adult Beginner Piano Class in 2015
An 8-week piano class for adults who are beginners, or folks who haven't played for a long time and want to have some fun learning a new way. Each week we'll meet one hour and will have some fun practicing to do during the week. Cost is $100 each and it includes a CD and book to use.
