REFUNDS:  The Registration Fee is not refundable.  The materials fee is not refundable.  A student who withdraws before the start of a session is entitled to a refund of tuition only. If it is determined by the end of the first class that the student is not able to succeed in the class, or is a disruption to other students, the remainder of the tuition may be refunded; however, if a student subsequently withdraws, there will be no tuition refund.

ILLNESS/ABSENCE:  If your child needs to miss class for any reason, please let Janet know by telephone (717-413-9714).  She will let the other class members know.

Please note that fees for missed classes will not be refunded; however we are happy to provide a make-up class where possible.  (Please call to arrange this beforehand).  The studio is not responsible if there are no other days for your child’s age group.  Make-ups may be carried over into a subsequent semester only if the family is enrolled in the subsequent semester.  The studio reserves the right to use a holiday week to makeup classes which the studio has canceled.

If your child is ill, please keep your child at home for your child’s own safety and the safety of others.

PHOTOGRAPHS:  Photographs may be taken in class and may be used without financial compensation, unless otherwise indicated in writing.

LOSS OR INJURY:
Musikgarten of Lancaster is not responsible for any loss or injury incurred while participating in the program.

Signature on the registration form or submission of electronic registration constitutes acknowledgement that the parent/caregiver assumes all responsibility and liability for any injury, costs or claims that the parent/caregiver and/or child may encounter during the course of instruction.

Signature on the registration form or the submission of electronic registration indicates that I have read, understood, and agree to the Musikgarten of Lancaster Policies.

FAMILY MATERIALS:  These materials are a vital part of the Musikgarten program and are intended to be used at home.  If your child listens to the CD at home, s/he will be prepared to participate in class with the other children.  If you sing and dance these songs at home with your child, they will begin to enjoy a lifetime of music-making because they see that music is an important part of YOUR life.

SIBLINGS IN CLASS:
Family Music for Babies – no older siblings please.
Family Music for Toddlers – siblings who are of crawling age up to age 5 who participate on a regular basis need to be registered.
Cycle of Seasons - siblings up to age 5 who participate on a regular basis need to be registered.

Holidays or school closings are acceptable reasons that may require you to bring your older child.  If you feel the older child will enjoy the experience, s/he is certainly welcome to either participate in class or bring something quiet to do while waiting for the class to finish.

FAMILY MUSIC NIGHTS:  A celebration of music making with your child! At the end of each semester, family and friends are invited to come and share what your child has been doing in class.  Come enjoy an evening of music making with family and friends!  You'll be glad you did!

PARENT MEETINGS:   Parents are expected to attend a curriculum night or parent meeting each semester/session.

INCLEMENT WEATHER: Please check the website Home Page at www.MusikgartenOfLancaster.org for up to date Inclement Weather Info. and class cancellations.

LATE FEES:  A $10 late fee will be assessed for any payment that is 10 days late.  If payment is more than 30 days late, unless prior arrangements have been made, the studio relationship will be cancelled.

CLASS SIZE:  There are minimum and maximum class sizes.  Timely registration is highly recommended.

PREVIEWS:  Previewing a class before registering is permissible for Family Music, and Cycle of Seasons, but keep in mind that waiting for the quarter or year to start might result in the preferred class time filling and not being available.  Previewing a Music Makers class is possible only after week three of the year, and only if space is available.

MUSIKGARTEN AMBASSADOR PROGRAM: Referrals are the most powerful way of keeping classes healthy and full.  Please consider becoming a Musikgarten Ambassador!  I will send or give you brochures to give to friends and classmates. If that classmate enrolls before September 1, you get 25 percent off your tuition for this or next semester. They must fully enroll and pay for the program by Sept 1. I need children for the Babies program (newborn - 15 months), the Toddlers program (15 months - 3 years), The Cycles program (3 - 5 years) and the Music Makers At Home in the World program (4 - 6 years). I'm also looking for seven year olds to fill the Music Makers at the Keyboard program. Please note that new children cannot enter the Music Makers at the Keyboard Book 3 and up.

SCHOLARSHIPS:  Scholarships are available for tuition, not materials, for children with developmental or financial need.  Please write a letter explaining the situation and why you would like to enroll the child, and please state how much of the tuition your family can afford to pay, e.g. one-half, one-fourth.  Requests for scholarship will not be considered if the family is excluding any children in the family between 4 to 9 years.

STUDIO AND CLASSROOM PROTOCOL:

Dress for “moving and dancing!”  Please remove shoes before the start of class. No food or drink allowed in the studio or classroom.  No peanuts allowed in the studio.

Food, toys, or other “distractions” often cause problems rather than provide comfort when brought into music class.  Since another child might want your child’s drink or stuffed animal, it is often easier to leave those thins at home or in the car.

Grown ups, please set an example of focused listening and enthusiastic participation.  Please wait until the end of class to enjoy conversation with others.

During this early childhood phase of musical development the emphasis is on play and not performance.  We never want to put pressure on the children to perform music a certain way.  Your example of full participation and attentive listening is powerful.  Count on that.

Please honor your child’s need for autonomy.  Allow your child’s spirit to lead the way.  You need restrain or lovingly redirect your child only if s/he is heading for trouble.

It is imperative, especially with toddlers that the parent gently guides, rather than manipulates.  There will be many times when exuberant children will feel it necessary to "explore outside the circle".  If this becomes too disruptive to the class, please take your child outside the class area for a moment to calm down and then return when s/he is ready.  The instructor may also intervene when necessary.  It is important that the parent and instructor work together when dealing with disruptive behavior.

Some children wish to be held during circle dances and movement activities.  Please do hold them at these times.  Music class is a time of family bonding and sweetness.

Understand that all children learn at different rates and in different ways.  Some will simply observe and will not directly participate in the classroom activities.  Some will do everything perfectly at home, but not in class.  You will find that your seemingly uninvolved child is absorbing everything in his/her quiet way.  How often parents tell me that their children love to try out the musical activities at home.  Yes, they have incredible powers of attention.  As a parent you know that every child is unique, so check your comparisons at the door and let the music work its magic!

MUSIC AT HOME:

At home and in the car, play your Musikgarten CD as often as possible.  This listening time greatly enhances your family’s enjoyment of the class.  There are countless other benefits to the heart, mind, and soul.  Learn the music by heart.  There is no treasure like a rich repertoire of music.

Make music an integral part of your daily life.  Lullabies at bedtime make an ideal family ritual that creates lasting joy and precious child/parent bonding times.  Make up songs as you work and play.  Use songs to transition from one activity to another, one setting to another.  If possible, play or learn to play an instrument, take voice lesson, join a drumming circle.  As you express yourself musically, you set a fire in the heart of your child.

Make music a time of playfulness, discovery, and family togetherness.  Warning: some children do shush the singing parent.  Try to find other ways to be musical around your child!  If your child shushes you in class, try not to take it personally.  The art of surrender and going with the flow comes in handy with creative endeavors.  And with parenting in general!

Happy music-making!

Dear studio parents:

Thank you for allowing me the privilege of teaching your child! In order to make our time the most productive, I have established the following policies for 2017-2018:

Lesson Times:  I try to work with each of my students in order to give them the most convenient lesson time. When arranging your child’s lesson time, please be as flexible as possible when informing me of your available times.

Location and Schedule: Piano lessons are offered at The New Holland Music Studio, 512 E. Spruce St., New Holland. To give everyone the most productive and uninterrupted lesson as possible, it is very important that you observe the following:

  • Please enter the studio at your designated time. I will do my best to begin and end your lesson on time.
  • My break times are designed to help me re-group, organize, breathe, and do other necessary things to assist me in teaching in the most efficient way possible. Because of this, I ask that you not arrive early or stay later than your lesson time.
  • To help prevent the spread of illness, please use hand sanitizer on the table at the top of the stairs in the studio.
  • If you are more than 5 minutes late picking up your child, a $5 charge will be added to the monthly tuition fee per every 5 minutes of being late.
  • Parents are required to be available during lessons (either at the lesson or via cell phone). In the event of an emergency, if a parent cannot be reached, you agree that I will be permitted to exercise my discretion in providing care and treatment for your child.  Parents agree to hold me harmless for any such care and treatment decisions.

Attendance: Regular and prompt attendance is required to make appropriate progress. If you are unable to make it to a lesson, please call or email: (717) 413-9714; janetmfitz@gmail.com. Group Lessons are scheduled in lieu of private lessons during the third week in October, January, February, March, and May. Group Lessons are scheduled in addition to private lessons in November, June, and July. Please refer to the Studio Calendar at http://www.nhmusicstudio.musicteachershelper.com.
Payments:
Registration: A yearly, non-refundable $30 registration/materials fee for new students, and a $25 registration/materials fee for returning students (not to exceed $75 per returning family) is due by June 10 to reserve a place in the fall semester. This fee covers preparation costs for the upcoming year.

Tuition:
  • Tuition for 30-minute private lessons is $1032 divided into 12 monthly payments of $86.  At this price, the student is guaranteed that I will be prepared and present to teach 40 weeks per year with additional music and performance opportunities. As students advance, their lesson time will need to increase
  • Tuition for 45-minute private lessons is $1464, divided into 12 monthly payments of $122.00.  At this price, the student is guaranteed that I will be prepared and present to teach 40 weeks per year with additional music and performance opportunities.
  • Tuition for 60-minute private lessons is $1908, divided into 12 monthly payments of $159.00. At this price, the student is guaranteed that I will be prepared and present to teach 40 weeks per year with additional music and performance opportunities.
  • Throughout 40 weeks of instruction, I am prepared to teach your child 35 private lessons, 10 group lessons, and 2 free performance classes. You will be notified of any additional costs for materials such as books or special projects.  Payment is due in advance, by the 10th of every month.  A $10 late fee is assessed for payments received after this date. Families should expect a yearly increase in tuition appropriate to cost of living increases and services offered.

Summer lessons are required. Gaps in the summer schedule mean that I will unfortunately have to fill the lesson time with another student and you will forfeit your spot in the fall schedule.

Missed Lessons: Because specific times are set aside for specific students, a student who does not attend a lesson will simply miss the benefit of that lesson.  Tuition covers far more than the time with your child, so you do not need to worry that missing a lesson means wasting money. I frequently use missed lessons to plan for your child’s progress, locate materials, etc.  See the "Where Does My Tuition Go?" brochure for more details. There are no refunds or discounts given unless I am unable to teach the promised number of lessons.

Missed Lesson Options: You can minimize missed lessons by taking advantage of:

  • Phone or “Skype” lessons during the student’s regular lesson time. (See details under “Illness”) In the case of inclement weather—please check your email or the website for lesson status.
  • Lesson Swaps: Families of private students may trade their lesson time with another student (“Lesson Swap”) to help avoid absences.
Here are the rules of a lesson swap:
  1. I must be informed prior to and after arranging a swap.
  2. No make-up lessons will be given if any confusion from this arises.
  3. Should 2 people arrive at once, I will teach the one whose lesson is normally at that time.
  4. Please inform me if you do not wish to have your name included on the swap list.
  • Two Free Performance Classes, each scheduled right before the recitals in December and July.

Illness:  Students who are ill should not come to piano lessons. I reserve the right to send a student home if they arrive sick.  If students are only mildly ill, please call or email me and we can do a phone or Skype lesson. If you have a computer with a camera close to your piano or a laptop that you can move close to the piano, please:
  1. create a free Skype account at http://www.skype.com/, 2
  2. let me know your Skype username, and
  3. add my Skype username (FitzStudios) to your contacts (or add my phone to your Facetime).  This will allow me to call you and have a video lesson with you over the internet if need be.

Late payments: Payments made after the 10th of the month will be assessed a $10 late fee.

Communication: Please keep in contact with me regarding your child’s progress and practice habits. Email is my most efficient method of communication janetmfitz@gmail.com, or you may call or text me at my phone: (717)413-9714.

Website Privacy: At times, I will post schedules, make announcements, using student’s first names only (no pictures).  Pictures and videos of my students may be posted periodically on my website with no names attached. Student’s music and recordings from studio competitions may also be posted on the website for the benefit of helping other students.

Recitals and Opportunities: Many opportunities for recitals and other music events occur every year. I keep my students informed of these opportunities through a periodic newsletter. I do require my students to participate in all studio activities including our holiday and summer recitals. Each recital is typically followed by a reception for the students depending on the facilities. Drinks and paper goods are provided. Parents are required to bring food items to the recitals. Parents must bring these items, regardless of whether or not they attend the reception. Recital/Participation Fees may apply.

Participation in group lessons is also required as this is an excellent program to ensure a thorough music education and evaluation. Other optional outside studio activities include additional recitals, field trips, festivals, and competitions. Participation in outside studio activities is encouraged.

Books and Materials: I will let you know what books are necessary for the student's progress, but obtaining them will be your responsibility, unless otherwise indicated.  Many books can be purchased at Menchey Music and Sheet Music Plus via the NH Music Studio affiliate link: www.sheetmusicplus.com?aff_id=436827.  It is important that books be purchased in a prompt manner.  I understand the expense that books can incur, and I promise that I will only choose books that I think are necessary and beneficial for the student's progress. In the fall of 2017, each student will also need to purchase a 3 ring binder with pockets and at least 4 dividers.  This will be used to keep handouts and theory assignments in order.  It can also be used as a scrapbook for recitals, competitions, etc. Students should stock this binder with manuscript paper and notebook paper, available free here: http://www.composecreate.com/students/assignment-book-items.   If the student’s folder is not consistently stocked, a $5 re-stocking fee will be charged (every 3 months) to cover the cost of printing these for the student.

Practice Time and Other Requirements:
I like to emphasize the quality versus quantity of time practiced. However, in order to experience good quality practice, and to realize progress, a minimum of 30 minutes a day, five days a week is necessary. As students advance and mature, this requirement will increase (Students taking 45-minute lessons should practice at least 45 minutes daily, and students taking 60-minute lessons should practice at least 60 minutes daily).  I try to be very specific about practice techniques to the student and the parent, so that each knows what quality practice consists of.  Students are required to report on their practice sessions via www.betterpracticeapp.com. Parents should read their children’s assignments and comment as needed via email or phone.

Weekly assignments of theory and technique are of utmost importance. Theory should be completed at the first of the week and technique should be practiced every day to help enhance the learning process.

Practice on a piano is required for piano students to make progress. Please try to have your piano tuned twice a year. I am pleased to recommend Dawn Herring, Piano Tuner/Technician (717) 299-5392.

A metronome is necessary for all students. A metronome with a “click”, and no audible pitch, is best.

Fingernails must be kept short at all times to allow for proper hand position and technique (piano AND flute).

Parents should plan to attend their child’s lesson (for 5 minutes or more) at least once every 3 months (more if necessary). This helps keep you in touch with your child’s progress, accomplishments, and difficulties.

Dismissals and Termination:  If for any reason you must stop lessons, 1 month’s notice is required.  At that time, I will pro-rate the tuition for your final month to reflect the number of lessons that you have received based on the last lesson date. You will be required to pay this balance. Regrettably, I will have to dismiss a student if any of these circumstances occur:

*Failure to pay tuition on time               *Persistent absences
*Un-cooperative attitude                        *Failure to follow practice as instructed
*Lack of progress due to insufficient practice or unfulfilled requirements

Thank you for abiding by these policies to help your child’s lessons to be the most productive and efficient!

Thank you also for the opportunity to teach your child.
It is an honor and pleasure to be their teacher!

I look forward to a great year.
