Summer Piano lesson Policy 2017

The Ellen Johansen Music Studio                      Policy is updated yearly
Summer Lesson Policy - for students taking lessons for the summer only
Updated June 2018

As of July 1, 2017 the tuition for weekly piano lessons is as follows:
  • 45 Minute lesson – $75 per lesson
  • 60 minute lesson  -  $ 85 per lesson
All students are expected to attend the lessons they schedule within the 7week period from July 10 through August 25.
All makeups must be taken by August 25th or these lessons will be forfeited.
Payment for lessons
No single lesson payments will be accepted.  All lessons scheduled must be paid for in advance by July 1. Payment can be:
  •  by credit card (a 3 percent fee over the price will be charged) Credit cards are accepted with an online invoice or at the studio.
  • by check or cash
  • There is a $25 fee for a bounced check.
Administration Fee
A $25 administration fee is due by the first lesson There is no refund for this fee if the child withdraws from lessons.
Materials Fee
A material fee of $30 is charged above the tuition fee.  All music and other material purchased for a student during the summer will be debited from this amount.  If the balance falls below $0 an invoice will be sent to pay the balance.  Any remaining amount will be credited towards the following year or refunded by August 25th.   This fee is non-refundable and there is no refund for this fee if the child withdraws from lessons. It is expected that students purchase music books that are part of the curriculum.  If you are purchasing the book through the studio, you will be billed for the book as well as the shipping fee and any required sales taxes.  Borrowed music from the studio shall be returned by the next week or student is charged for the replacement of the book.
Students are enrolled and committed to attend lessons and complete assignments for the entire summer. Lessons are scheduled and parents/students will receive an email reminder and a text reminder.  although the parent/student has the option to turn off the reminders, missed lessons are not refunded.  All lessons are accounted for at  You have access to this accounting by logging in as a parent.  Please contact Ellen if you are unable to log in. It is the responsibility of each family to double-check lesson attendance.
Missed Lessons
Because specific times are set aside for specific students, a student who does not attend a lesson will simply miss the benefit of that lesson.  Canceled lessons due to sickness or inclement weather may be made up at the discretion of the teacher.  No make-ups will be given if a student misses a lesson for going on vacation, scheduling a medical appointment during the scheduled lesson time or for other special events during the summer.
If you wish to swap your time with another student, this is possible assuming another student is willing to swap that week.  Contact Mrs. Johansen at least one week in advance if you wish to swap a lesson time. There is no guarantee that a student will be willing to swap.
Illness:  Students who are ill should not come to piano lessons.  Mrs. Johansen reserves the right to send a student home if they arrive sick.  You will not be charged for a lesson if your child is not feeling well.
Lesson Time Policy
If a student is late to their lesson, the lesson begins at the appointed time and ends at the appointed time.  Lessons cannot go overtime to accommodate a late student.  If the student is more than 15 minutes late, it is considered a missed lesson and the student will be charged.  If Mrs. Johansen is not present at the studio for a scheduled lesson time, the student is expected to wait for 15 minutes before leaving the studio.  The lesson will then be made up at a later date (not included as a makeup as stated above).  If Mrs. Johansen arrives within the 15 minute grace period, then the lesson time will be adjusted or the time will be made up at a later date, depending on everyone’s schedule.

If a student withdraws at any time during the year, tuition will be charged for the following two weeks of lessons.  Any outstanding fees for books not returned or purchased will be charged and any remaining balance will be then refunded.
Piano at Home
It is essential that your piano is in tune.  Arrange to have your piano tuned at least twice during the school year.  It is also expected that your piano is maintained so it is playable.
All students are expected to practice daily. To progress at the piano, the pianist must visit the piano daily if possible and have enough time to complete the weekly assignment.
Additionally, all students must bring all music books needed during the lesson.  Please do not expect the studio to supply books left home.
